Who we are
Paul & Katie are friends and neighbors passioniate about teaching and growing the Mahjong community. We look forward to meeting you at one of our community events or working with you to host a private event!
Paul
Paul’s lifelong love of games began in childhood in Nebraska, where family gatherings always included a card table for cribbage, pinochle, or rummikub. Those early experiences fostered a lasting passion for play, strategy, and connection around the table.
Today, that passion continues with Mahjong. Drawing on his professional background in corporate training, Paul brings a clear, engaging teaching style to help others discover and enjoy the exciting world of American Mahjong. His approach combines structured instruction with a genuine enthusiasm for building confidence in new players.
Together with his neighbor and close friend Katie, Paul co-founded Northstar Mahjong Society to share his love of games and create a welcoming community where people can learn, play, and connect.
Cheers!
Katie
Katie’s love of games began around the card table playing euchre at family holiday gatherings. During years of moving acround the country for her husband’s job, she used games such as bunko, euchre & cribbage to connect with new neighbors. While they were young she used games to teach her twin sons lessons in polite conversation, inclusion, and fairness. You will always find a deck of cards and a cribbage board with Katie wherever she goes.
Katie has partnered with her friend and neighbor, Paul, to share the joy of American Mahjong. As an elementary school teacher, she brings patience, clarity, and a true passion for teaching to every lesson.
She is excited to help grow a welcoming and vibrant community of mahjong players with Northstar Mahjong Society events!
